Le Grand Chai Bordeaux 2016
Bordeaux is probably the most famous wine region in the world. And because quality is at an all-time high, there’s never been a better time to be a fan (or become one) of its classic reds. As The Wine Advocate’s Neal Martin says of 2016:“...we are looking at a vintage that can send tingles down the spine and back up again …”
Your taste comes from Le Chai au Quai, a 19th-century cellar in the heart of Bordeaux that Decanter magazine hailed as “a fabulous venture.” It was converted to a boutique workshop by Tony Laithwaite and now Château Haut-Brion alum Jean-Marc Sauboua works his magic here – using the ripest fruit from top vineyards across the region.
Jean-Marc’s smooth, French barrel-aged Merlot red is a beautiful, deep crimson color and offers up deep aromas of cigar box and red berries. Seductive red currant and plum follow through on the palate – you might even pick up a hint of vanilla and cinnamon. Perfect for your favorite cut of beef.
This is definitely one of the best values we’ve found so far from 2016. And, like many of the more serious reds, it’s already drinking beautifully. But very few cases were made – so you’ll have to hurry for yours.
